GARDNER
One man was injured, two men are under arrest and a third is being sought by police following a wild incident outside a wake that was being held Friday night at a funeral home on Pleasant Street.
Lt. Gerald Poirier said police were called to Poliks Funeral Home, 431 Pleasant St., at about 7:39 p.m. after receiving reports of shots being fired in front of the building. He said when they arrived they found a terrorized group of people who had been attending the wake of the late Ingrid Chamorro, 35, of 39 Mission St.
Ms. Chamorro died Sept. 20 at UMass Memorial — HealthAlliance, Leominster Campus.
Lt. Poirier said people at the funeral home directed police to a bleeding man in the street. The 46-year-old Worcester resident, whose name was not released, told police he had been beaten, forced into a vehicle at gunpoint by three men and driven to the funeral home. At the funeral home, the victim was able to escape. He said the victim told police that two shots were fired when he was making his escape and one bullet grazed his forehead.
The victim refused medical treatment for his injuries.
Once they had a description of the vehicle involved with the attack, police issued an all-points bulletin to all area police departments describing the vehicle and its occupants. At 11:20 p.m., Lt. Poirier said, Princeton police spotted the suspect vehicle heading toward Worcester on Route 140. Police from Princeton, Sterling, West Boylston and State Police Departments converged on the vehicle on Route 140 near Route 190. Police found only one person in the vehicle.
Carlos M. Romero, 46, of 39 Mission St., the driver, was arrested Friday night and charged with kidnapping, attempted murder, assault and battery with a firearm, and illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition.
A search of Mr. Romero’s vehicle yielded illegal drugs and a handgun, believed by police to be one of two guns used during the assault and kidnapping.
The second suspect was arrested yesterday morning at the funeral home when he attempted to attend services. A Gardner police officer who was providing security at the funeral home made the arrest. The suspect was identified as Ronald Serrano, 36, of 32 Sand St., Gardner. Mr. Serrano was charged with attempted murder and kidnapping.
A third suspect is being sought by police. Lt. Poirier said police are looking for Sonic A. Torres, age 32, who is homeless. An arrest warrant has been requested through Gardner District Court charging him also with attempted murder and kidnapping.
Mr. Torres is described by police as a Hispanic male, 32, 6 feet tall, weighing about 200 pounds. He has four missing fingers on his right hand and multiple tattoos; most notable of which is a tattoo of the numbers “666” over his right eyebrow. He was last seen on foot in the Fitchburg-Leominster area. Both the victim and the three suspects belong to the same group of family and friends attending the wake services. Both Mr. Romero and Mr. Serrano are being held over the weekend under high bail at the Gardner Police Department lockup. Both will face arraignment in Gardner District Court tomorrow.
Lt. Poirier said the incident is believed to be drug-related and the investigation remains open.
