Communications

Are you ready for a career that is challenging, exciting and rewarding? If your answer is yes, Sterling Police Department Communications Division wants YOU!. We are currently hiring for Full-Time Emergency Dispatcher. See our Employment Section for details.

The Communications Professionals at the Sterling Police Department are at the heart of our law enforcement community. The communications center is staffed 24 hrs a day 365 days a year. Our professionals deal with a volume of 911 & non-emergency calls as well as dispatch for Police, Fire, and EMS. We operate in a state of the art dispatching center in the Sterling Police Department

 Take the Dispatcher Test

1. You are the dispatcher. You receive the following 3 calls to dispatch:

  1. A delayed vehicle burglary.
  2. A fight in progress at a bar.
  3. A verbal dispute between a customer and a clerk at a gas station.
Which call do you need to dispatch first?
Answer: B, the fight in progress is the highest priority call of the three.

2. You are on the phone with a caller (non emergency line) who is telling you that their 18-year-old son never came home from school today. The 911 phone lines are ringing, do you?

  1. Stay on the call with the missing 18 yr old.
  2. Hang up on the parent and hope they call back later.
  3. Put the non-emergency line on hold, and answer the ringing 911 lines.
Answer: C, you always prioritize by putting non-emergency calls on hold to answer 911.

3. What information is important to obtain from someone whose vehicle was stolen from the mall?

  1. The vehicle description.
  2. The location in the parking lot where it was stolen from (what store are they near).
  3. What the time delay is (how long since they saw the car in the parking lot).
  4. All of the above.
Answer: D All of the above. The vehicle description helps us in case we see the vehicle on the way in. The location in the parking lot precludes the deputy from driving around in circles looking for the caller. (Landmarks help: for example, store name, or pole number in the parking lot). And finally, the time delay is very important. It could mean the difference in response. (How many units we send!)
