FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

7/20/2007

The Sterling Police Departments would like to notify all residents of a series of house break ins that have been occurring in Sterling and surrounding Towns. The breaks have been occurring during the daytime hours while people are at work. The thieves are targeting homes that are relatively secluded and not readily visible from the road or from neighboring homes. As of now the break-ins have been occurring in the Justice Hill Rd area, however the thieves are mobile and all residents should be extra vigilant.

This group of individuals are targeting jewelry, cash and in some cases large high-end television sets and computers. Some of the homes accessed were through unlocked doors.

We are asking residents to lock their doors, if you have an alarm system utilize it. Keep an eye on your neighbor’s property. If you see a suspicious car or person in the area call the police immediately, don’t wait or debate if you should call or not. You are not bothering us, we would rather respond to one hundred false calls for service than even one actual housebreak.

If you can obtain a license plate number of a car you think is suspicious that would be helpful. Try to obtain the direction the car is headed and relay that to the dispatcher. When you call the police you will be asked your name, you are not required to provide it.  If you want to remain anonymous just tell the dispatcher you would rather not leave your name.

If you happen to be your home and it is targeted try, to leave without being noticed. Go to a neighbor’s home and call the police or use your cell phone.  If you cannot leave your home, call 911, you will not have to say anything we will be able to trace the call and will respond immediately. DO NOT confront the intruders. Most people who break into homes just want property they want to avoid confrontations.

The Sterling Police Department is working with many other town police departments in an effort to stop this crime wave. The criminals responsible for these crimes will be apprehended and we appreciate your assistance.
