FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Press Release  - Sterling Police Department

Date:  29 October 2007

Three juveniles have been arrested and charged with four counts of Wanton Destruction of Property in connection with recent incidents of mailboxes being damaged in the Town of Sterling. The investigation is continuing and two adults may also face charges in the same incidents.  Police also are not ruling out additional charges being brought against the youths. The three youths arrested are ages 14,14 and 15 and are all Sterling residents.

The arrest were made on Saturday evening at approximately 9PM. Two callers to the Sterling Police dispatch center reported mailboxes being smashed on Heywood Rd and North Row Road. Police units approached the area from strategic locations and were able to locate a vehicle leaving the area. Officers stopped the vehicle and located a partially concealed baseball bat in the back seat. One of the occupants admitted their roll in damaging at least four mailboxes.

“Although in the grand scheme of things smashing a mailbox may not be a serious incident, we take it very seriously”. “What may be viewed as simply pranks by the offenders are serious incidents and a major inconvenience to homeowners”, said Chief Chamberland.

All the credit for these arrest goes to callers who reported the activity immediately and to the night shift officers who have been aggressively trying to put an end to these incidents. Officer Bourque, Pomeroy and Sgt. Gaudette did a great job said Chamberland.
