FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Press Release  - Sterling Police Department

10/13/2007

On Saturday October 13th a Public Safety Day was held at the Sterling Fire Department. The police and fire department brought out much of their equipment to put on display.

The police department displayed its two newest vehicles. A 2007 Harley Davidson motorcycle and a 2008 Crown Victoria Police Interceptor low profile cruiser. Both of these vehicles are seen daily around Sterling. Public Safety day gives residents an opportunity to see the equipment up close and to ask questions about how their tax dollars are being spent.

Also on display was a 2007 Ford van that serves at the Animal Control Vehicle. Animal Control Officer Louis Massa showed off his new truck and all the equipment he carries on board. Louis also had three kittens that were adopted on Saturday.

The police department gave away more than fifty bicycle helmets and also kicked off their bicycle safety program. With each helmet a S.H.I.E.L.D. Safety Helmet Identification Emergency Lifesaving Data packet was given out. This packet contains a sticker that is affixed to the outside of the bicycle helmet alerting emergency responders of the ID tag inside the helmet. There is a data sheet that contains important information about the child, such as name, address, emergency contact information, blood type and doctors information. All this information is contained in a small protective packet inside the helmet. In the event of an accident emergency responders have this vital information at their fingertips.

These SHIELD stickers can be used on helmets for skateboarding, in-line skating, snowboarding or any other activity where a helmet should be worn. These packets are available at the Sterling Police Station free to any Sterling residents. They are not offered to out of town residents since their emergency responders may not participate in the program.

Officer Pomeroy, Officer Plouffe, Chief Chamberland, Mrs. Chamberland and Karen Gaylord, the police department’s administrative assistant spent the day passing out Halloween bags that contained safety tips about safe trick or treating, candy and identification kits. They fit the bicycle helmets and answered questions pertaining to many various issues.

Every year the public safety day seems to get bigger and better. This year was no exception and the officers are looking forward to the 2008 public safety day..
