Sterling Shelter Offers Reward For Stolen Puppies

(CBS4) STERLING A Sterling animal shelter is offering a $1,000 reward for any information leading to the return of two stolen puppies.

The 9-week-old female hound-shepherd mixes were stolen Tuesday night or Wednesday morning from the isolation wing of the Animal Shelter Inc. of Sterling.

“I personally walked by their pen last night at 6 p.m. and saw them sleeping on their beds,” said shelter director Leigh Grady.

It's believed the black and tan pups were taken from their pen sometime between 8 p.m. Tuesday and 7 a.m. Wednesday.

The kennel staff noticed two of the three puppies from that pen were missing and the gate was opened from the outside.

Grady said the puppies were spayed last night and are still in need of urgent care.

"We are also extremely concerned that these puppies may have been stolen to be used as bait dogs for training fighting dogs or worse yet, sold to a research lab,” said the shelter's director.

“Bottom line is that our shelter staff is devastated – we all get very attached to these little fuzzballs and have a great stake in the care of them. These puppies were rescued from being euthanized down south only to come up to our shelter and face an uncertain situation,” Grady adds.

Anyone with information is asked to please contact the shelter by phone at 978-422-8585 or e-mail at staff@sterlingshelter.org or call the Sterling Police Department at 978-422-7331.

Puppies Stolen From Sterling Found In Hudson

Reporting

(CBS4) BOSTON Two puppies that were stolen from the animal shelter in Sterling were found Wednesday night in Hudson.

Safe and sound. The 9-week-old lab-hound mix and her sister are a little tired, but their ordeal on the run is over.

"They're a little dehydrated, they need to eat and they need lots of love," said Leigh Grady, who is the shelter's director.

The siblings were stolen from the animal shelter in Sterling Tuesday night. Police now say by two teenagers who had looked the cage over earlier in the day, then came back after hours. The dogs had just been spayed and a third sister was left behind.

But when the teens needed a place to stash them, police say they called on a friend in Hudson. When pictures of the dogs aired Wednesday, that friend's grandmother made the call to Hudson police.

"Even better news: one of the dispatcher adopting one of the puppies," said Grady. "So, we're very thankful for that, as well."

Police have not yet filed any charges, but the shelter's director says she wants the teens prosecuted.

The second recovered puppy will return to the shelter for a check-up and be put up for adoption again. And after this, it's likely the phone will be ringing off the hook.

Four People To Be Charged In Sterling Puppy Theft

(CBS4) STERLING Four adults and a teenager will be charged in connection with the theft of two puppies from a shelter in Sterling last week.

The 9-week-old lab/hound mix pups were turned over to Hudson police that night.

Sterling Police are not releasing the suspects names. They say all four turned themselves in Thursday.

Two adults and the juvenile will be charged with breaking and entering, larceny and consipracy. The fourth, a female adult, will be charged with conspiracy and receiving stolen property.

All four will be arraigned Friday in Clinton District Court.

Workers at the Animal Shelter Inc., noticed the 9-week-old lab/hound mix pups missing on March 8.

There was extra concern because the dogs had just been spayed and were in need of medical attention.

Police originally said two people who had looked the cage over earlier in the day, came back after hours and took the puppies.

The suspects allegedly left the animals with a friend in Hudson but when pictures of the dogs aired Wednesday, that friend's grandmother made the call to Hudson police.
